Join The Nature Institute members and friends and take a leisurely moonlit hike through the Mississippi Sanctuary, a 37-acre area of grand vistas and spectacular scenery, including waterfalls and wildlife. Terrain is light to moderate and the hike is about an hour long.

Every third Thursday of the month The Nature Institute partners with Eddie Agha of Agha Designs Jewelry Studio and invites the public to a program of the TNI Astronomy Association. Participants will navigate the preserve with naturalist Eddie Agha to observe and record constellations. No telescopes are needed. Guests will also receive short, instructional lessons about activities and workshops associated with the program, and find out how to join the TNI Astronomy Association.

SNOWFLAKE FESTIVAL

Visit beautiful Glazebrook Park as it is lit up with lights to celebrate the season. Get your picture taken with Santa Claus, roast chestnuts and marshmallows on an open fire, carriage rides and free hot cocoa and treats. In honor of the giving season, attendees are asked that non-perishables food items are brought for donation to the Crisis Food Center.

Be one of the thousands of runners and walkers who hit the nation’s pavements, pathways and parks this winter to fight arthritis, the nation’s most common cause of disability. Jingle Bell Run/Walk® is a fun and festive way to kick off your holidays by helping others! Wear a holiday themed costume. Tie jingle bells to your shoelaces. Run or walk a 5 k, 1 mile walk, or a 1/2 mile kid run route by yourself or with team members and celebrate the season by giving. Includes an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast after the run/walk.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Celtic Christmas II, with Celtica and the Clarkson School of Dance by the Great Rivers Choral Society will rekindle the flame in the hearth with music and song from the infinitely rich treasury of Ireland's cultural heritage. Imagine a wintry day in the Christmas season, where Irish and Scottish musicians regale locals and travelers alike with their playing. Caroling from the choir mixes with the instrumental riffs of the traditional musicians, and the warmth from their collaboration literally chases the cold winter away. This concert will bring together the worlds of classical and Celtic music.

This popular program is presented by naturalist, Mr. Paul Shetley. Paul will give a slideshow presentation about his experience with amphibians and participants will learn how to identify them by their sounds and key features. Afterwards, there will be a hike to a pond to catch and release Leopard frogs, American toads, and other amphibians. Bring a flashlight, waders (or extra shoes) and a camera.

The Nature Institute again brings the Riverbend community together for this celebration of nature, music, food, and the arts. Guests can participate in organized hikes along TNI’s woodland trails, enjoy fresh, local foods, and peruse unique goods by local vendors and artists. Other features will include live music (including an open jam so bring your instruments!), a children’s activity corner with nature-inspired arts and crafts, hands-on informational booths, clothing swaps and textile collection, and electronic recycling opportunities.

CABIN FEST

This fund raising festival’s activities features a 27 hole disc golf tourney, eco-friendly kids crafts, geo-caching (GPS treasure hunt), canoeing, hiking, bonfire and drum circle. Musical guests include Typsy Gypsy, The Dream Catcher Project, Blu Skies, and Dave Thompson. Chris’ River Market will provide Bar-B-Q and beverages for purchase throughout the day. Bring lawn chairs, drums, hula hoops, or a blanket but please leave your coolers at home. Proceeds from the festival benefit the Cabin Restoration Project, a collaborative effort begun in 2012 to renovate the group camp cabins in Pere Marquette State Park.

Get into the Halloween spirit with The Nature Institute’s friends of the forest. These friends will be dressed up as nocturnal animals along the Enchanted Forest Trail. Visitors will be “treated” to some nature knowledge about these animals as well as getting sweet treats. After the guided hike, visitors can enjoy chili, hotdogs, and enchanted games and crafts at Talahi Lodge. Dress up in a costume or come as you are. There's fun for the whole family.
