The 7-mile stretch near the river communities of Grafton and Elsah along the upper portion of the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway area is an area that bustles with activities for visitors throughout the year. Grafton and Elsah hold a variety of events in all seasons that range from historic tours and festivals on the riverbank to activities promoting fall foliage and the American Bald Eagle. Pere Marquette State Park, the largest in the state, hosts a variety of free programs focusing on the natural beauty and heritage of this region of Illinois. RUG RETREAT

Professional rug hooker Kathy Meentemeyer is a certified McGown rug hooking teacher from St. Louis, Missouri. She teaches at workshops throughout the country, as well as her studio at home. Kathy is an accomplished dye artist and specializes in color planning. Her desire is to help students express their own creativity. The camp includes overnight accommodations at one of Elsah's bed and breakfast inns, catered meals by My Just Desserts, a house tour and a walking tour of the village.

Begins in Grafton and ends at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in West Alton, IL

Be a part of this canoe and kayak race on the Mississippi River. Rendezvous in Grafton where the race will begin at 12 pm. Then, race your way 18 miles down river to the end of the race at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in West Alton, MO. Clubs, shops and spectators are invited to attend. In addition to the race, there will social paddles, skills clinics, family paddles, food and music.

Join hundreds of cyclists in this fund raising event for the American Diabetes Association. Travel along the Great River Road, flat & moderately hilly country roads on routes of 16, 30, 50, and 100 miles crossing ferries and bridges. There will be support vehicles patrolling the routes and stocked rest stops every 9 to 12 miles. Following the ride all cyclists enjoy complimentary lunch, live music and free admission into Raging Rivers Water Park!

FAMILY FISHING FAIR

TOWBOAT FESTIVAL

Catch a rare glimpse inside the giant towboats that travel America's Great Rivers. BLESSING OF THE FLEET

Participating boats will launch at 1 pm from the Yacht Club of St. Louis proceeding downstream or at Harbor Point  proceeding upstream in the main channel of the Mississippi River. About 2:15 p.m. the parade will arrive at Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine in Portage des Sioux, and end in Grafton.  The parade will be visible from the Great River Road.

Learn the art of paper piecing at the annual Elsah Fall Quilt Retreat. Some quilts can look quite difficult, but they can be made easy through the technique of paper piecing. With Barb Marfell as your instructor, you will receive professional instruction, a supply list, two lunches, two suppers, snacks, a walking tour through the Village of Elsah, road trip to Crocker & Springer Pottery and a presentation by guest speaker, Hallye Bone.
The cost of the retreat is $130 per person. Housing is additional, but we will make the reservation for you. The cost for a two night stay is $188 per person for a single room and $169 per person for a double room

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources invites women to attend a weekend of adventurous outdoor activities.  You can try charting a course, calling a bird, shooting a bow, firing a shot, tying a fly, catching a fish, building a campfire and more.  Attendees enjoy the natural beauty of Illinois, companionship, exercise and skill building.  Program instructors provide a supportive, safe, nonthreatening and noncompetitive learning environment.  The program is open to all women age 18 or older.
A fee of $135 per person includes instruction, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, seven meals and lodging. Applications and payment must be received no later than August 29, 2008.

Learn the art of traditional rug hooking through this retreat designed for beginners or students interested in improving their skills. Classes are held in the Old Elsah limestone school in rooms that are well lit with natural light and a beautiful view on the Mississippi River limestone bluffs. The retreat includes meals, instruction, and evening house tour of one of Elsah’s Historic homes, and a pottery tour of Crocker and Springer.
