How to get to Sometimes referred to as "The town that Shell built," the grounds for a refinery was bought by Roxana Petroleum in 1917 with operations beginning a year later. Bunkhouses were used to house the men that worked at the refinery and goats were used to keep down the weeds between the storage tanks. The town of Roxana was platted northwest of the refinery and incorporated in 1921. It is believed that the name of the town is derived from Roxanne, the name of the wife of the owner of Royal Dutch Shell. Visitors interested in the history of the refineries can visit the Shell History Museum (formerly known as the Wood River Refinery Museum) which is located on Route 111.
