  We regularly update this calendar to provide you with up to date information on a variety of events that take place in the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway Area. Changes are made when we gather more information or when we learn of an event. If you know of an event that you would like to see posted contact the webmaster. McCully Heritage Project, Crawford Creek Road, south of Kampsville off of IL-100
The McCully Heritage Project will be tapping maple trees and making maple syrup beginning in February through mid-March. Once the sap starts flowing, they will be cooking every 2nd or 3rd day, over an open campfire, just outside the McCully Heritage Project pavilion. Scheduling of this event is completely weather dependent. Check the MHP homepage at or “like” them on Facebook for updates on the schedule or to find out when the sap is cooking. The public is invited to participate, and to learn about how trees are tapped and sap is collected and turned into maple syrup.

Visitor Center, 13112 Visitor Center Lane, Off IL-100 (the Great River Road)
A Park naturalist will be presenting informative programs about bald eagles. Visitors will learn to distinguish between immature and mature eagles, what they eat, why they winter in the area and more. There will be a lecture and a short video presentation followed by an observational drive. Be sure to dress warmly and have a full tank of gas. Binoculars are highly recommended but not essential as the Park brings along a spotting scope.

Talahi Lodge at the Olin Nature Preserve - The Nature Institute, 2213 South Levis Lane
Join The Nature Institute members and friends and take a leisurely moonlit hike through the Mississippi Sanctuary, a 37-acre area of grand vistas and spectacular scenery, including waterfalls and wildlife. Terrain is light to moderate and the hike is about an hour long.

Join the staff at the Watershed Nature Center every third Tuesday for a narrated hike along its mile long trail. Come out and explore the trail on a morning hike. Bring your curiosity, questions, and keen eye for observation.

Talahi Lodge at the Olin Nature Preserve - The Nature Institute, 2213 South Levis Lane
Every third Thursday of the month The Nature Institute partners with Eddie Agha of Agha Designs Jewelry Studio and invites the public to a program of the TNI Astronomy Association. Participants will navigate the preserve with naturalist Eddie Agha to observe and record constellations. No telescopes are needed. Guests will also receive short, instructional lessons about activities and workshops associated with the program, and find out how to join the TNI Astronomy Association.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, 130 Ramey Street, (off Collinsville Road)
Observe the spring equinox sunrise and learn of the discovery, form and function of an ancient post circle called Woodhenge that was used as a solar calendar by the Cahokians. No ceremony or ritual is presented. Woodhenge is located 1/2 mile west of Monks Mound and the main entrance to the site.

Audubon Center at Riverlands, Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Join the staff at The Audubon Center at Riverlands for an evening of star gazing and enjoying nature at night. Knowledgeable astronomers will guide your viewing of the night sky and staff from the Center will lead nature walks throughout the Sanctuary to listen to ducks and swans communicate on Heron Pond.  There will be refreshments at the Center, go for a short prairie walk to hear the night birds, and finish at the site set up for stargazing behind the Center. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to assist and telescopes will be provided. Bring camp chairs and dress warmly for chilly weather.

March Waterfowl Madness is a ranger-led walk on the Swan Lake levee just one mile from the Brussels Ferry in Calhoun County. Attendees will have a chance to view the thousands of waterfowl that make a stop at the Refuge on their annual spring migration. Participants should meet at the Swan Lake levee parking area.
