From the weekend after Thanksgiving through the week after Christmas, the Middle Mississippi River Valley hosts a number of holiday events to celebrate the season. Communities such as Keokuk, Quincy, Alton, O’Fallon, and St. Louis create dazzling holiday light displays in public parks. Historical and cultural intuitions bedeck their sites with unique holiday decorations. Other communities like St. Charles hold special events throughout the season.
CHRISTMAS BAZAAR
Cobden, IL

This annual event features Christmas decorations and gifts at reasonable prices. The bazaar begins Saturday, November 19 and runs every weekend through Saturday, December 10.

Missouri Botanical Garden
The Missouri Botanical Gardens continues a cherished tradition, which inspires interest in the Victorian era and its connections to Henry Shaw and the history of the Garden by decorating the Victorian country home of Garden founder Henry Shaw for the season with wreaths, garland, floral centerpieces, greenery and a holiday tree. Younger visitors can look for old-fashioned toys hidden throughout the house and will receive a coloring book titled “A Cold Winter’s Evening in Shaw’s Garden” based on Clement C. Moore’s popular poem ‘Twas the Night before Christmas, which was written in 1823.

Visitors to the display will be able to tune into the “Voice of City of Christmas” at 90.1 on their FM radio dial as they near Rand Park and to listen to holiday carols and hear the story of City of Christmas and comments about the various displays as they travel through the myriad of lights and displays.

St. Charles celebrates the holidays with festivities that include caroling, chestnut roasting, authentically costumed Santas from around the world, and a Santa Parade each weekend. Visitors will find candlelight shopping and dining Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings as the shops and restaurants on South Main Street stay open until 9pm as well as special activities beginning at 6:30.

CHRISTMAS WALK

Over 1,500 luminaries light your way through historic Augusta the first two Friday evenings of December. This annual event has more than a 25 year history and has become a tradition for the Augusta community to host.  A complimentary Trolley Shuttle will take you through town to visit the many shops and antique stores, wineries and brewery, restaurants and food stands. There is Christmas caroling and a giant Christmas tree at a local church. Enjoy the challenge of gathering items from all the shops in the Holiday Scavenger Hunt and turn your answers in at the History Museum and register for prizes from local merchants. The town square features a horse drawn carriage ride around the heart of town, a toasty bon fire with Chestnuts roasting and marshmallows toasting, and Santa Claus..

A NIGHT IN BETHLEHEM

The Village of Elsah opens its doors for the annual “Home for the Holidays” house tour. Seven charming homes in this historic village will be on display, festively decorated for the holiday season from 3:00 to 5:45. In addition, two bed and breakfast inns, the village’s two churches featuring special music, the Elsah Museum, and 19th century Farley’s Music Hall will be open for the tour. The tour will be followed by an old fashioned caroling procession from the river to Selma Square where the tree lighting will take place at 6:30 pm.
Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the Alton Visitor’s Center, at several business in Elsah, or, after 1:00 pm on the day of the tour, at either the Village Museum or at Farley’s Music Hall.
