  The 7-mile stretch near the river communities of Grafton and Elsah along the upper portion of the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway area is an area that bustles with activities for visitors throughout the year. Grafton and Elsah hold a variety of events in all seasons that range from historic tours and festivals on the riverbank to activities promoting fall foliage and the American Bald Eagle. Pere Marquette State Park, the largest in the state, hosts a variety of free programs focusing on the natural beauty and heritage of this region of Illinois. MIGRATORY BIRD HIKE

Gilbert Lake division parking area one-fourth mile west of the Brussels Ferry on IL-100.
This International Migratory Bird Day Hike takes visitors on a walk through the Gilbert Lake division of the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge with a refuge ranger to celebrate the spring migration. The Gilbert Lake Walking Trail is a 3-mile loose gravel trail.

TOUR THE NINA & PINTA

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources invites women to attend a weekend of adventurous outdoor activities.  You can try charting a course, calling a bird, shooting a bow, firing a shot, tying a fly, catching a fish, building a campfire and more.  Attendees enjoy the natural beauty of Illinois, companionship, exercise and skill building.  Program instructors provide a supportive, safe, nonthreatening and noncompetitive learning environment.  The program is open to all women age 18 or older.
A fee of $160 per person includes instruction, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, seven meals and lodging. Pre-registration required.

The focus will be on exercise and stamina as the hike takes participants past creeks, 100-year old trees, and stops at two scenic overlooks. Wear good hiking shoes and bring a snack, a camera, and binoculars for this six mile hiking adventure that will last about 3 hours.

This Lewis and Clark program will feature staff dressed in period attire from the Lewis and Clark Historic Site in Hartford, IL. There will be a discussion on the importance that Illinois played in the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Learn about this rich and often overlooked history that began here in Illinois. The afternoon session will be free and open to the public with a discussion lasting from 1-2:30 pm followed by activities for our younger explorers from 3-3:30 pm.

The festivities will conclude with a Show Choir performance at the Grove Memorial Park Gazebo as we light up the town!

NAUGHTY OR NICE RUN

The Naughty is a four-mile loop featuring the Mile High Hill. The Nice is a two-mile river walk along our bicycle trail. Start and finish at the Big Kahuna located at Grafton Harbor. The first 150 participants will receive a long sleeve shirt and a goodie bag. There will be an awards ceremony and refreshments to warm you back up after a scenic and gratifying start to your day.
The cost is $20 per entrant, $25 for those who register after December 2.

The house tour is from 2 pm to 5:45 pm.  This year, in addition to touring historic homes, the village museum, two churches, bed and breakfasts and riding in a horse drawn carriage; you can tour the classrooms, and purchase raffle tickets at the Old School House. The day’s festivities culminate with caroling and Santa between 5:45 & 6:30 pm at the Civic Center . Lunch will be available for purchase at Farley’s Music Hall between 1 pm and 6 pm (or until sold out) catered by My Just Desserts.
Advance admission is $15 and is available at the Alton Visitor’s Center or at either B&B in Elsah. New this year, is an option to purchase tickets with a credit card or your PayPal account. Advance tickets are recommended. Tickets are limited and day of event admission will be $18 (cash only).
