There are approximately 2,000 eagles that migrate to the Middle Mississippi River Valley, making the region's overwintering population the second largest in the continental United States. There are a number of excellent sites to view our national symbol in Missouri's Lincoln Hills Area including Lock and Dam #25, Clarksville, and the Ted Shanks Conservation Area. Taking the Winfield Ferry into Illinois will lead visitors to Pere Marquette State Park, Grafton, and the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway.
Bird Watching The Mississippi River Valley is one of North America's major bird migration corridors. Over 326 species that use the river corridor as a home or a stopping off point during their migration including the American Bald Eagle and the American White Pelican. Locks and Dams The Corps of Engineers built a series of locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi to make the river navigable. These structures can be visited and their impact offers some unique recreation opportunities.
