There are approximately 2,000 eagles that migrate
to the Middle Mississippi River Valley, making the region's
overwintering population the second largest in the continental
United States. There are a number of excellent sites to view our
national symbol in Missouri's Lincoln Hills Area including Lock and
Dam #25, Clarksville, and the Ted Shanks Conservation Area. Taking
the Winfield Ferry into Illinois will lead visitors to Pere
Marquette State Park, Grafton, and the Meeting of the Great Rivers
Scenic Byway.
The Mississippi River Valley
is one of North America's major bird
migration corridors. Over 326 species that use the river corridor as a home or a
stopping off point during their migration including the American Bald
Eagle and the American White Pelican. There is a wealth of great
locations for bird watching in the regions that greatriverroad.com
covers.
Whatever your preference, the
Missouri Lincoln Hills area has a large variety of camping accommodations to choose
from, ranging from full service RV parks to primitive campsites in
natural surroundings.
The Corps
of Engineers built a series of locks and dams on the Upper
Mississippi to make the river navigable. These structures can be
visited and their impact offers some unique recreation opportunities.
