Lock and Dam #21
Quincy, IL

Lock and Dam No. 22 is located near Quincy, Illinois the Upper Mississippi River around river mile 324.9. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places construction of the lock and dam began in 1933 and became operational in July 1938. The dam portion of the structure is 1,265 feet long and consists of 3 roller gates and 10 tainter gates. A 1,400-foot long submersible earthen dike extends to a flood control levee on the Missouri shore. The main lock is 110 feet wide by 600 feet long and there is also an incomplete auxiliary lock. Many endangered bald eagles establish their winter home in the trees along Lock and Dam 21.


Directions: Take the Gardner Expressway (IL-57) southeast of downtown Quincy to W. Lock and Dam Road and then 1/2 mile to Lock and Dam #21.
