Thousands of motorcyclists travel to Bald Knob Mountain, Southern Illinois’ highest point and the site of the Bald Knob Cross of Peace located just outside of Alto Pass, about 10 miles south of Murphysboro on IL-127. Sponsored by the Christian Motorcycle Association, motorcycle riders are encouraged to bring their bikes to the cross as the official kickoff of the spring and summer riding season. CMA Prayer Leaders provide brief personal blessings, and the event is made complete with great food, music and a spirit of camaraderie. The blessing occurs in late April or early May, and literally thousands of motorcycles and riders cover the top of Bald Knob mountain. The event is often held in conjunction with other local events targeting motorcycle enthusiasts.
