Johnson Creek Recreation Area is one of three recreational areas on
beautiful Kinkaid Lake. Located on a northwest finger of the lake,
Johnson Creek Recreation Area offers a variety of outdoor activities.
Here you will find something for everyone in the family, from
picnicking, camping and swimming to hiking along the lake, biking the
scenic roads, and horseback riding. Kinkaid Lake was built in 1968 with
an average depth of 39 feet, although the area near the Dam on the
southernmost tip) is approximately 80 feet deep. The lake encompasses of
2,750 acres which winds around the northwestern hills of Shawnee
National Forest. The natural features of the area vary from sandstone
bluff formations to rolling hills surrounding the lake where oaks and
hickories predominate. Numerous flat contours are planted with prairie
grasses, cool-season grasses and wildlife food plots. The site features
trails for both hikers and horseback riders.
There are four boat ramps on the lake are available to the public with a
full-service marina. No horsepower restrictions apply, although numerous
no-wake areas exist on the lake.
Anglers can try their luck out fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill,
crappie, catfish, walleye. and muskie. Johnson Creek beach and picnic
area has plenty of grassy areas for play and relaxation. There are no
lifeguards at the beach. For picnickers there are tables, shelters,
charcoal grills and restroom facilities. Camping is allowed at a 20 unit
campsite at Johnson Creek Recreation Area.
