The Ft. Madison Area Arts Association is proud to bring an exhibit spanning decades of creativity and development in the arts. Harriet Souder brings an arsenal of large scale acrylic paintings, stained glass, and fiber. Bringing farm strength to her perspective, she captures her subject matter in a historical, nostalgic flavor. Many see a Thomas Hart Benton shade to her style. Harriet has recorded the history of her experiences in a visual artistic form that the Midwest fully embraces.

On exhibit is the work of international pastel artists Cecile Houel and David Garrison. Houel has studied art at several renowned institutions and her work has been on display around the world. Garrison studied art at Iowa Wesleyan and the American Academy of Art. The two are married and have displayed their work internationally.

CITY OF CHRISTMAS

Old favorites and new additions are part of City of Christmas that features approximately 100 displays and nearly one million lights. Visitors to the display will be able to tune into the “Voice of City of Christmas” at 90.1 on their FM radio dial as they near Rand Park and to listen to holiday carols and hear the story of City of Christmas and comments about the various displays as they travel through the myriad of lights and displays.

BALD EAGLE
APPRECIATION DAYS

Keokuk, IA

Victory Park: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
River City Mall: 9 am - 5 pm
At Victory Park personnel from the Lee County Conservation Board, Iowa DNR, Illinois DOC and the US Army Corps of Engineers will staff viewing points with spotting scopes to enable visitors to see the large gathering of bald eagles that congregate at Keokuk because of Lock and Dam #19. Activities at the River City Mall include DNR agencies from Iowa, Illinois and Missouri displays, Wood Carvers’ Show, Native American Traders Row & educational booths, Native American drumming, singing & dancing, and storytelling, and World Bird Sanctuary of St. Louis live bird presentations.

KEOKON

KeoKon was founded in 2007. What began as a family and few friends sharing the love and knowledge of science fiction has grown to provide the Tristate area with a forum for fandom of science fiction, technology, gaming, and fantasy. Costumes are always encouraged in our family friendly environment. The noontime tradition of celebrating Captain Kirks birthday continues amongst Steampunk enthusiasts, artisans, gamers, and lovers of all things fantasy and Sci-Fi. Forums include technology, costuming, gaming, paranormal, and comics.

BATTLE OF PEA RIDGE
CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT

If you are interested in the Civil War and want to get "up close and personal" with history then you will truly enjoy your time at this annual Civil War Reenactment. Activities include a Ladies Program and Tea, a Military Ball, Breakfast with the Troops, a National Cemetery Memorial and Church Service, campfires and two Battle Reenactments.  While in Rand Park, visitors can tour the camps, visit Sutlers Row, snack on period food and enjoy period entertainment.

MAYHEM ON THE MISSISSIPPI
4K RACE

Join in on the fun in the Mayhem on the Mississippi Obstacle run! This fun filled event presents a challenging obstacle course covering over two miles throughout Riverview Park. All participants are encouraged to join in at the Main Street BBQ following the run! Registrants that sign up the day of the race may not receive a T-Shirt so register as soon as you can for this exciting and fun event.

This annual event celebrates the history of Fort Madison. The event will include history reenactment programs, raptors from the World Bird Sanctuary and other wildlife. On display will be Native American artifacts and military weapons, World Bird Sanctuary, Blank Park Zoo, Department of Natural Resources. There will be buggy rides, pioneer games, refreshments and more. Come enjoy the day learning about Fort Madison, where Iowa was born.

The first Lee County Fair was held in 1841 making it the oldest country fair in Iowa. The Lee County Fair has continued to grow and add many attractions over the years. Present day fair-goers find many different exhibitions; not only livestock and farm, but garden produce, art, sewing, and just any type of hobby or trade you can think of. Grand Stand events include tractor pulls, sprint car races, and a demolition derby. The Lee County Fair has something for everyone.

HISTORIC FOURTH OF
JULY CELEBRATION

Old Fort Madison, Avenue H (US 61) at Riverview Park
Come and celebrate the birth of our nation in the military fashion of the early Republic. The Old Fort’s staff and volunteers will recreate the Independence Day celebrations commonly seen at United States military posts across the country in the early nineteenth century. Watch as the garrison fires thirteen shots in accompaniment with the officers' thirteen toasts in a period commemoration of the America's freedom. The ceremony will begin at 1 pm.

The Charlie Korschgen "kiddies parade," held on Avenue G in downtown Fort Madison at 10 am, is the oldest 4th of July kiddie parade in the nation having been held continuously since 1913. At dusk, view a spectacular fireworks display in Riverview Park.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL
West Point, IA

Thousands of visitors come to West Point for the annual Sweet Corn Festival, a premier tri-state attraction traditionally conducted during the second week of August from Thursday thru Sunday inclusive, in the town square. WATERMELON FESTIVAL

Fort Madison’s annual Riverview Games offer many kids activities as well as adult volleyball, badminton, and bags tournaments. Bring the kids down for "Olympic" events such as the Football Toss and the Obstacle Course as well as for a bouncy house and other activities. There will be plenty of great food and refreshments on hand. At 10 am there will be trying an attempt to beat Guinness World Record for the Longest Chain to Pass a Hula Hoop so everyone's help is needed! A medal ceremony for the kids will take place at the end of the day and cash prizes will be awarded to the adult tournament winners. It's a fun filled day for the whole family so come on down.

TRI-STATE RODEO

Since 1947, Fort Madison has hosted one of the nation’s top professional rodeos in a 10,000 seat outdoor arena that plays host to four performances. The PRCA Rodeo action begins every year the Wednesday after Labor Day and provides quality contestants in all the areas of rodeo, from the bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing to the crowning of the Miss Iowa Rodeo. If you are planning to attend the rodeo, get your reservations in quickly since the area fills up with other fans of quality rodeos.

A wonderful, family-oriented festival. The festival starts with a free pancake breakfast. Activities at Railroad Park include games, an apple-peeling contest, tours of the Depot, a Craft Alley, a water fight competition, a basketball contest, a car show, tractors, and much, much more for the young and the young at heart. Musical entertainment also featured during the day and into the evening. Also featured are a city-wide scarecrow contest and an apple exhibit from Apple Berry Orchards. SIEGE OF 1812 WEEKEND

Buckskinners, mountain men, Indians, traders and craftsmen will descend upon Riverview Park and camp around the walls of the Old Fort on Rodeo Weekend to hawk their wares and spin some yarns. Reenactors will recreate the War of 1812 siege of the fort with simulated battles. A frontier rendezvous will give visitors a glimpse into what the fort was like as a "factory" trading post.

In addition to the artists that will be displaying their wares in almost every medium are a number who will be providing demonstrations as well. The Spooktactular Boo-Athlon includes a kids run, a 5k run/walk and 10k bike ride and a Duathlon where you bike and ride. There will awards for different age groups and events. This fundraising event was created to benefit PORT (Promoting Outdoor Recreational Trails) of Fort Madison which is working to expand the network of trails within town the community. Participants are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes.

This is a time to bring your family and friends to Fort Madison's Main Street District for "the lighting of the buildings" followed by the largest lighted parade in the Southeast Iowa region and create a holiday tradition. Following the parade, the lighted floats will be on display in Riverview Park
through the end of December.
