On any summer Tuesday night you can find a true touch of Americana as the conductor strikes up the Waterloo Municipal Band for another concert. The Band’s repertoire includes marches, show tunes, standards, some light classical selections, and yes, a little rock and roll! In keeping with the German heritage of the community, the band also indulges the crowd with an occasional polka

MONROE COUNTY FAIR

Monroe County Fairgrounds, IL-156 
This annual fair features agricultural exhibits and many horse related events. Other exhibits include arts and crafts, 4-H projects, floral arrangements, art and photography, and quilts. Carnival rides are a favorite and local organizations offer food and refreshments. The Fair Grandstand events range from tractor pulls to the FFA competition and the annual Fair Queen Pageant and the Little Miss contest.

COLUMBIA DAZE
Columbia, IL
  August 15 - August 16, 2014
4 pm - Midnight, both days
Turner Hall, 211 East Cherry Street
Festivities of this annual event include carnival rides, games, live music, food and drinks, historic trolley tours, and fun. A parade is held at 5 pm on Main Street on Saturday and the event features live music beginning at 8 pm both nights.

WATERLOO HOMECOMING

Monroe County Courthouse Grounds
The Waterloo Homecoming is held annually the last Friday and Saturday in August on the Courthouse Square. This event features live music, carnival rides, games, and plenty of food and drink offered by local organizations. A parade is held on Saturday with floats, marching bands, and other items of interest.

OPTIMIST BLUE ARMY BULL BASH

35 of the Championship Bull Riding’s greatest cowboys will do battle against the toughest 2000 lbs., four legged bovine athletes in the country at this event presented by Waterloo Rural King and in benefit of the Waterloo Optimist Club helping area youth. Live entertainment and autograph session afterwards.

ARTS ON THE BLUFF

Main Street, downtown Columbia
This annual art walk is held in downtown Columbia. Start at either end of the walk, Columbia City Hall or the Kids Walk Area, and experience over 40 plus exhibiting artists along Main Street. There will be hands on art activities at the Kids Walk. Stop by to doodle on the Doodle Board and add to the kid’s mural. Visit the Student Gallery to see the local art work from students ranging in age from 6 to 80. A true celebration of the arts wouldn’t be complete without our musical and street performers. A variety of refreshments will be available from many local food vendors.

MAKING APPLE BUTTER

The Rock Mill, Mill Street
Want to learn about how old fashioned apple butter is made? Instruction in the art of making apple butter will be provided at the restored 1859 rock mill in Maeystown.  Members of the Maeystown Preservation Society will demonstrate various apple peeling and stirring methods in preparation for the annual Oktoberfest in October. Apple peeling will take place at the mill between 8 am and 1 pm. on Friday. Apple stirring will begin at 6 am and go until 3 pm on Saturday.

OKTOBERFEST

Maeystown Historic District
Experience the sounds and smells of autumn at the historic village of Maeystown. This event features arts, crafts, antiques and food around the stone mill and bridge. More than 50 artisans, crafters, dealers, and numerous food stands will be featured. Arts and crafts will include rug weaving, felting, blacksmithing, photography, woodworking, and a country store. Food will include turtle soup, potato pancakes and popcorn cooked in old-fashioned kettles. Bratwurst, funnel cakes, apple butter, and pies will be some of the other choices available. The village specialty shops, bed & breakfast, restaurants and museum will be open throughout the day.

CHRISTMAS PARADE

Come out to see all the wonderful Christmas themed parade floats, each with over 1,000 lights, and walking groups dressed in holiday inspired costumes. The parade starts at Gibault Catholic High School and follows the Porta Westfalica Route to downtown Waterloo. In case of inclement weather the parade will take place on Sunday, December 1. The parade is sponsored by GLOW (Great Ladies of Waterloo.)

GERMAN CHRISTMAS

FASTNACHT

St. John Church, 1301 Franklin Street
The day before Ash Wednesday activity at the church hall starts with a family style dinner of pancakes, sausage, applesauce and doughnuts from 5 to 8 pm is accompanied by live entertainers providing German music. In keeping with German tradition, children will dress in costume and go “grebbling” door to door to collect dough-nuts, then come back to win votes in a costume contest. Grebbling starts at 5 p.m. in front of the church.

SPRING ART SHOW

The Spring Art Fair highlights and recognizes the works of local artists in the Monroe and Randolph County area. Art will be displayed from 11 am until 4 pm in the ballroom of Corner George Inn and at the Preservation Society Mill and Museum both days. The St. Joe Women’s Fellowship will be serving food at the Mill. Artists are chosen each year by Historic Maeystown for the two day event.

This annual festival's activities include sheep shearing, spinning, weaving, and working sheep dog demonstrations. Also featured are agricultural exhibits and displays, antique tractors, clinics, and entertainment. A variety of food and drink including a lamb lunch are available from local organizations.

LION’S CLUB CAR SHOW

This show benefits uninsured people who need eye surgeries. There will be a DJ all day, 50/50, attendance prizes, 1st 100 entries will receive a dash plaque and a goodie bag, food and drink available on grounds, all paved parking and plenty of shade, all entries must be driven into show (trailer parking available.) The event also features Max Attack, a Mopar drag race team.

The annual Fruehlingsfest Antique and Garden Show takes place around the stone mill in the heart of this historic town. Fruehlingsfest features quality antique dealers from the Midwest and various nurseries selling annuals, perennials and herbs. A variety of food will be offered at Fruehlingsfest, and a creek-side wine garden, served by Ravissant Winery, will also be featured.

This annual event is held in honor of the Sister Cities partnership between Waterloo and Porta Westfalica, Germany. The festival is held on the Courthouse Square with plenty of food and drink. The traditional German fare of pork sausage and potato pancakes is available. The Waterloo German Band and the Waterloo Municipal Band perform throughout the evening. A parade featuring floats and marching bands begins at 6 pm.
