TOUR DE BLUFFS BIKE RIDE

Prairie du Rocher, IL

Prairie du Rocher Village Park, 503 Henry Street
Starting and ending at Prairie du Rocherís  Village Park this ride features a choice of scenic "rider friendly" routes of 12, 25 or 42 miles with rest stops on all of the routes with fluids, fruit and surprise snacks. There will be detailed maps available the day of ride. Proceeds to benefit preservation of 19th Century Creole House located in the heart of historic Prairie du Rocher.

WW 2 WEEKEND

Fort De Chartres State Historic Site, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher on IL-155
WW 2 will visit this Colonial French site in a program entitled Honoring our WW 2 Heroes at Fort de Chartres. An educational encampment will display the equipment of area reenactors covering a variety of aspects of historyís largest conflict. A ceremony honoring the areaís veterans from all of Americaís engagements will be held. A simulated battle will be held with props such as tank obstacles and wall sections between American and German forces. There will be plenty of food and refreshments available.

FRENCH & INDIAN
WAR ASSEMBLAGE

The French and Indian War signaled the decline of France's influence in North America and helped spark the American Revolution. This Living History event portrays this time period at this reconstructed historic fort with camp life, contests, and vignettes.

FETE AT THE FORT

Fort De Chartres State Historic Site, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher on IL-155
Come join the fun and be a part of the annual Fete at The Fort at Historic Fort de Chartres. This is a perfect opportunity to sample what brewers will be showcasing in a unique 18th Century environment. The first 1500 attendees will receive a commemorative Fort de Chartres sampling glass to enjoy beer samples from participating breweries. All of this taking place at a French fort with 18th century reenactors- natives, French Marines, British soldiers, Cannon crews, Fife and Drum Corps, and Bagpipe groups to name a few! Hot Dogs, Brats, water, and soft drinks will be available in the food court. Proceeds benefit the Save Illinois History foundation which supports the Historic Sites of Illinois.

SPARTA LIGHTED PARADE
& HOLIDAY EVENTS

Various Locations throughout Sparta
Sparta is home to a variety of holiday activities throughout the day. An Arts and Crafts Fair can be found at Sparta Park on West Belmont Street from 9 am to 4 pm. The Howell Holiday Hustle Run starts at 5:15 pm. The Lighted Christmas Parade begins at 6 pm and starts at the Sparta High School and runs through the downtown area. Immediately following the Parade there will be free chili and entertainment at the Sparta VFW at 1911 North Market Street and kids will be able to visit with Santa. At 8 pm there will be a fireworks show

CHRISTMAS ON THE RIVER

EAGLE TREK

Kaskaskia River Recreation Area, 4800 Lock and Dam Road
Come out for eagle-watching with spotting scopes and meet some of the feathered inhabitants of the World Bird Sanctuary (9 am to noon)! Also, enjoy short interpreted walks both upstream and downstream from the Dam, and see the confluence of the Mississippi & Kaskaskia Rivers. Our experts will be on hand to tell you about other eagle-nesting sites nearby! Families and leash-trained dogs are welcome for the hike. Tours of lock and dam and kid's activities are also featured.
A suggested donation of $5/person is asked to cover lunch expenses. Please reserve your spot by Feb. 1, 2012 so we can account for the number of lunches.

COLONIAL TRADE FAIRE
& MUSKET FROLIC

Fort De Chartres, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher on IL-155
Merchants, artisans and craftsmen will display and sell handmade and period wares at this annual event.  Mid to late 1700s period musket and rifle shooting matches will test the skills of participating re-enactors. La Bonne Epouse, or a women's contest for "The Good Wife" will be held.  Other featured activities will include colonial games, period music and a benefit auction. The public is invited to watch the events free of charge and shop at the Trade Faire. The event is presented by Chasseurs du Datchurat, a group of historical reenactors that recreates the lives of the longhunters of the Illinois country and Spanish Louisiana from the middle 1760s to the middle 1770s.

INDIAN ARTIFACT SHOW

Members of the Illinois State Archeological Society encourage everybody in the community to come out and learn more about our local prehistoric past at this annual show. There will be a flintknapper doing educational demonstrations throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to bring their collections of arrowheads or axes to learn more about their history. There will be over 60 exhibitors with tables full of locally found artifacts on display, as well as a great exhibit of Historic Fort de Chartres related items from the times of the French and Indian wars. Some dealers will also be on hand and they will be looking to buy and sell Native American artifacts.

KID'S DAY

At this special annual event kids get to participate in free historical activities throughout the day. Kids get to learn how to make a leather pouch, make rope, and write with a quill. Kids get to get their faces painted, shoot a bow and arrow, and listen to a very funny and great puppet show.

One of the largest in rendezvous events in the country occurs annually at this historic fort. 18th century crafts, food, music, 1000's of historically dressed participants, flintlock musket and rifle competition, cannon and mortar competition, traders and more.

The Randolph County Historical Society will conduct guided tours of the Creole House, a 19th century home with French American transitional architecture that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Creole House is only a two block detour for visitors attending the Rendezvous at Fort de Chartres.

WEST CELEBRATION

This annual celebration takes place at the site of the Liberty Bell of the West, which was rung when
Rogers Clark and his Long Knives captured Kaskaskia on July 4, 1778. A ceremony starts at 12:30 with speakers and the French Colonial Marines from nearby Fort de Chartres. The celebration also features live music, food and other refreshments, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception will be open for tours.

This fair features special events, variety of foods, parade, 4H, livestock, and agricultural exhibits. Events scheduled include a Craft Fair, 4H small animal judging and open horse show, a 4 wheeler pull and lawn mower, a 4H horse show, a 4H livestock auction, a tractor and truck pull, and a mud bog.

The annual Popeye's Picnic is always held the first weekend following Labor Day. As always the event starts on Friday afternoon and features plenty of food, music, dancing, sporting events and other contests. A parade is held on Saturday morning and a sizeable fireworks display is the finale on Sunday evening. The event is centered around the downtown area of Chester, but activities are held throughout the town.
