Annual
Promenade des Art
Ste. Genevieve, Missouri

Saturday and Sunday
October 11 - 12, 2008
Historic District of Ste. Genevieve
Free
Inspired by a tradition that dates back to the 1930's
the members of the art guilds of Ste. Genevieve, Jefferson, St. Francois,
and Perry Counties will hold their Annual Promenade des Arts in Lions
Park and the Felix Valle Historic Site in historic downtown Ste. Genevieve.
The community has a long history as a center of the arts. Art schools and
art colonies thrived in the region during the 1930's and 1940's and
attracted such notable artists as Aimee Schweig, Jesse Beard Rickly, Bernard
Peters, Thomas Hart Benton, and Joe Jones. In 1932, a group of artists led
by Rickly, Peters and Ste. Genevieve local Matthew Ziegler, came to paint
and engage in discussions about art and the various social issues of the day. This group centered around the Mammy Shaw House (now part of the Felix
Valle Historic Site) and held an exhibition in late September of 1932. The success
of the first event inspired additional exhibitions until the colony
dissipated by the onset of World War II.
The revival of the art show is a means to educate the
public on the artistic traditions of art in Ste. Genevieve region, to
provide a venue for contemporary local artists to display, sell, and discuss
their techniques and approaches of their work, and to showcase the work of
one of the Summer School artists.
