DETAILS OF THIS EVENT
HAVE NOT BEEN CONFIRMED

For over 10,000 years humans have continuously called the Illinois River Valley home. With the fertile land and diverse resources there was no reason to migrate elsewhere. The Center for American Archeology works to preserve this heritage, train future archeologists and educate the public.

Archeology Day is a full day of archaeological site tours, excavation demonstrations, informative displays, and lectures on the cultural occupation of Native Americans in the Illinois River Valley. Hands-on pre-historic technologies that include pottery making, basket weaving, and making dream catchers make this a fun and educational event for all ages and interest levels.

In 2023 the event features:
• Native American artist, Kimberly Bugg. Kimberly will be demonstrating corn cob dolls and speaking about their history and importance in Native culture.
• Native American artist, Kathy Dickerson. Kathy is a member of the Kiowa tribe. She will be demonstrating beadwork and can share information abut her leatherwork using traditional methods.
• Experimental archaeologist, Larry Kinsella. Larry is a CAA Legacy and is coordinating a never before attempted dugout canoe making project. He has invited stone tool enthusiasts from around the world to join him in chopping down and shaping a dugout canoe using only stone tools. This project is ongoing during the month and will be a featured part of our annual event.
• Tour the German Site, a Late Woodland Jersey Bluff phase (ca AD 800-1200) residential site currently being excavated by the CAA’s staff and field schools.

This event is in part supported by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, the Illinois General Assembly, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
