Ongoing Special Exhibits & Events - The Middle Mississippi River Valley

The Middle Mississippi River Valley is home to a number of venues that are the home to ongoing events that that last for a period of time. The venues range from the institutions at Forest Park in St. Louis including the Science Center and History Museum. Other events include nature outings and corn mazes.

T. S. Eliot: A Game of Chess

T. S. Eliot: A Game of Chess explores Eliot’s famous poem, The Waste Land, through the theme of chess. After World War I, the Spanish Flu, and his father’s death, Eliot wrote The Waste Land, a poem expressing grief and feelings of alienation in a rapidly modernizing society. Situated just steps from his parent’s home in Saint Louis' Central West End, this exhibit features artifacts and multimedia displays relating to Eliot’s poem, his chess metaphors, and the many strands of his life that he wove into his writing.

This exhibit showcases reproductions of the work of Missouri’s first known woman artist, Anna Maria von Phul. Her artwork illustrates life in the Missouri Territory during the 1810s and 1820s, including the people, culture, architecture, and landscape of early St. Louis. Visitors will learn about this fascinating figure from history through reproductions of von Phul’s artwork, letters, and other selections from the MHS collections.

St. Louis is a kaleidoscope of architecture, filled with structures of every age, shape, and size. In Coloring STL, visitors can interact with these fascinating buildings in a way they never have before - by coloring them, right on the walls. From downtown’s iconic landmarks to the very homes lived into buildings now erased from the landscape, this interactive exhibit delves into the stories of more than 50 local structures, all of them waiting to be filled with color. Visitors can also get an up-close look at dozens of artifacts and learn about the dreamers and designers who used the materials beneath our feet to leave their mark on the city.

Donna Dodson: Match of the Matriarchs and other Amazonomachies

Donna Dodson: Match of the Matriarchs and other Amazonomachies is the first solo exhibition by a female artist hosted by the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF). The show, which centers on women’s stories, women’s lives, and their place in the history of chess, includes Dodson’s monumental, life-sized chess set Match of the Matriarchs, which contains 32-large scale wooden sculptures representing all-female representations of cephalopods battling cetaceans.
