The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (formerly the Forum for Contemporary Art) was founded on the Mississippi riverfront in 1980 by a group of community leaders in order to introduce visual arts programming and cultural activities into the downtown core. The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis mission is to present the best recent visual art and ideas and this non-collecting museum is the leading venue for contemporary art in Saint Louis. The Contemporary is recognized nationally for the quality of its exhibitions and education programs.

In 2003, the Contemporary opened its 27,200 square foot building in Grand Center, the midtown arts and entertainment district. The building consists of two levels and the gallery space was designed with an intentional vacancy that is meant to achieve meaning through the art itself. The diversity of exhibition spaces invites the public to engage in the presentation of new work. The Contemporary is next to the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, which charges no admission and is accessible via a courtyard that connects the two.

New York-based artist, writer, and publisher Paul Chan came to prominence in the early 2000s with vibrant moving image works that touched upon aspects of war, religion, pleasure, and politics. Around 2009 Chan embarked on a self-imposed break. Taking the notion of a “breather” as its organizing principle, this exhibition surveys Chan’s activities since his break from that point to the present.
